Working to make Costessey a better place to live and work

Cllr John Venes

Cllr John Venes

Councillor

Costessey Town Council

I grew up between Old Costessey and Cloverhill, spending most weekends and school holidays on The Street from the age of four. My childhood was shaped by the village, from playing in the River Wensum with friends, to helping at local events, and being taken to Costessey Sunday football games, where my guardian served on the football club committee. I was a proud member of the 16th Norwich Sea Scouts and attended Costessey High School.

I have fond memories of shopping at the farm shop in West End and visiting the post office when it was next to the church. I also spent time with many of Costessey's old characters, helping some with their gardens and sharing coffees with them in their later years. These moments gave me a deep appreciation for the people who shaped our town and the stories that live on in its streets.

My partner and I both work full-time while continuing to renovate our home and garden here in Costessey. We're passionate about sustainable living, composting, recycling, and upcycling wherever we can.

Before joining the council, I spent over 20 years working with the Tall Ships Youth Trust, helping young people develop life skills and create unforgettable experiences aboard 200-foot sailing vessels. When those ships were sold, I felt a real void, one I now hope to fill through my commitment to local service.

I currently serve as an Enterprise Advisor at Ormiston Victory Academy, working in partnership with Norfolk County Council to support young people in preparing for the world of work. This role allows me to continue mentoring and guiding the next generation, something I care deeply about.

I joined the Town Council to give back to the place that shaped me, and to help build a more inclusive, sustainable, and connected community. My priorities include:

  • Creating meaningful opportunities for young people
  • Promoting community involvement and transparent governance
  • Supporting sustainable development and environmental action
  • Enhancing local infrastructure and public spaces

I'm passionate about the environment and believe in the power of positive change through effective decision making. I also believe that councillors don't need to have all the answers, but we do need to listen, learn, and help point people in the right direction.

I encourage you to reach out to me, whether in person or via social media, to share your thoughts, concerns, or ideas. Together, we can shape a town that reflects the best of who we are a thriving, welcoming place on the edge of Norwich that we're proud to call home.
